As Ukraine steamrolls forward with its NATO and EU aspirations, one small Ukrainian village is trying a different tack to get that European feelin’
L’viv; The New Prague, Little Paris, Vienna 100 years ago, The Brugge of the East, Grosse Krakau, Transcarpathian Liechtenstein or The Belgravia of Galicia…
These are but a few of the really annoying comparisons being made between Eastern Europe’s ‘next big thing’ of former Soviet state cities; L’viv.
L’viv has much to offer in the way of cheap booze, cheap rent, cheap cigarettes, cheap food, cheap transport, cheap dentistry, hot, hot women and some interesting, tall buildings with crosses on them. There are also really old cars, drunk old people everywhere and policemen with more metal teeth in their heads than bullets in their handguns. Sounds like Krakow only a few years ago, yeah? Well, sounds like Birmingham last Saturday night actually.
Whilst L’viv city council plans to do ‘a Krakow’ on itself in the next few years, one tactic they have chosen is already sending ripples through Krakow’s expat community. The mayor of L’viv, Frankie Gogol has commenced a process calling for Europe’s inspirational (sic) expatriate artists to descend on L’viv and invigorate the community with their unquestionable brew of music, style, fashion, creativity and venereal toxicity.
